Eye Spy: Skating outfit
Posted on Saturday, 16th September 2023 by Janine Rizzetti
An outfit ‘of its time’ perhaps? This brightly coloured ‘skating outfit’ was made by Robertson & Moffatt of Bourke Street for Miss Emily Dods to wear at a fancy-dress party on board ship during a voyage to England.
The hand-sewn costume has 3 pieces: a ‘crazy patchwork’ skirt, a lace-up blouse, and a matching domed, silk-lined hat. Crazy patchwork was popular in the late 19th century and it is thought that this dress dates from 1900-1910.
