Next Meeting 12 April 'Out of the Madhouse'
Posted on Saturday, 2nd April 2022 by Janine Rizzetti
We are pleased to welcome Sandy Jeffs and Margaret Leggatt to our next meeting on Tuesday 12th April at the Ivanhoe Uniting Church Community Centre at 8.00 p.m. Sandy and Margaret’s book Out of the Madhouse was the winner of the Victorian Community History Award in the Oral History category in 2020.
Larundel Psychiatric Hospital in Plenty Road Bundoora is now surrounded by housing and the Polaris shopping centre. However, Sandy and Margaret’s book takes us into the heart of Larundel through the voices of former inmates and staff, exposing the best and worst aspects of the mental institutions of the times. It shows the shifts in psychiatric treatments, the social forces at play, and changes driving mental health policy. It explores what de-institutionalisation and ‘care in the community’ actually meant for those suffering mental illness, as well as for those treating, and caring for them.
Please bring proof of double vaccination.
