Some light on the subject

Posted on Tuesday, 1st July 2025 by Janine Rizzetti

People passing the Old Courthouse sometimes think that it is a two-storey building, but it’s not. Those clerestory windows high in the building were a major source of light for the courthouse, which was important because electric lights were not installed until 1937- thirty-eight years after the courthouse was opened!

But after 126 years, those windows needed attention, and we are grateful to DEECA for funding to repair and replace the clerestory windows. The most badly damaged frames were removed and replaced, and the windows needed to be boarded up while the frames were repaired. But now the boards are removed, the replacement frames have been inserted, the scaffolding is down and once again light floods into the courthouse, just as it was designed to do in 1899.

Thank you to DEECA for providing the funding that made this work possible.
